A Federal government agency

Objectives

  • Consider the structure and relationships between the agency’s campuses, groups and functions
  • Develop an organisation design that is flexible, effective, readily implemented and embraced by internal and external stakeholders

Workshop details

We facilitated three half day workshops with the board of this government agency

Workshop one – half day workshop to successfully kick-off the project, seek direction from the board on how to engage stakeholders and clarify the board’s role in the project

Workshop agenda items

  • Discuss and confirm stakeholder engagement approach
  • Identify the board’s role in stakeholder engagement

Workshop two – half day workshop to review the organisation’s current design, prioritise improvement ideas and review alternative organisation designs

Inputs to the workshop (we assisted the client in preparing these inputs)

  • Reviewed internal drivers leading to the organisation design review, including an assessment of the current structure against industry benchmarks
  • Collected more than two hundred ideas from staff on the issues facing the agency by conducting one-on-one interviews with key staff, three focus groups with more than 60 staff, a survey of 87 staff and meetings with the branches
  • Conducted interviews with external stakeholders, including members from the staff consultative forum and union representatives

  • Identify the issues and challenges of the current organisation design
  • Analyse the agency’s key processes to map accountability to each organisational function
  • Prioritise ideas from staff and identify five priority improvement areas in the organisation design
  • Review alternative organisation designs

Following workshop two we assisted the client project team in refining the board’s preferred organisation design based on feedback from the board.


Workshop three – half day workshop with the board to refine organisation design

Workshop agenda items

  • Present and confirm refined organisation design
  • Develop a communication plan for rolling out the new organisation design
  • Confirm immediate next steps for implementation of the new design

 Outcomes of the workshops

  • A new organisation design, including a plan for implementation
  • Greater ownership from staff and stakeholders of the new organisation design

In our client post-engagement survey for this project the client rated the overall project as five out of five (where one was highly unsatisfactory and five was highly satisfactory), including a rating of five out of five for impact of the work. The client also rated Right Lane as ten out of ten for how likely they are to recommend us to a friend or colleague.
